XGear’s new Blackout ($30), Folio ($70), and Shadow ($50) are three different plastic shells for the iPad. Blackout is a generic black plastic shell similar to the Chinese OEM ones we’ve previously seen from other companies, with four completely open sides and little nubs on the bottom to stabilize the iPad on a flat surface. There’s no screen protection or coverage for the bezel; only the corners are gripped. Shadow adds faux carbon fiber leather on top of the same black shell, and Folio goes a step further, with a flip-open front protective flap that can be bent back to serve as a video stand. Notably, Folio doesn’t feel quite like most of the folios we’ve previously covered — its side, top, and bottom are almost entirely open.
