Each recent revision of the iPhone has brought improvements to Apple’s camera hardware, leading camera accessory developers to modify their miniature tripods to become iPhone add-ons. XShot is the latest company to take a stab at the genre, releasing the XShot iPhone 4 Case with Detachable Tripod Adapter ($30), a matte black case lined with soft foam and bundled with tripod accessories.
The case is a snug fit — a little too snug from our perspective as it pinches pre-installed screen protectors — and has holes in the top and side rather than button protectors. But once it’s installed on the iPhone 4, you can slide one of two included device mounts into either the left or bottom sides of the encased iPhone, giving you portrait or landscape orientation mounting options with the flexible miniature metal tripod.
XShot’s tripod uses an industry-standard screw so that you can attach it to other small digital cameras, and folds tightly for travel. Thankfully, the price isn’t crazy, and apart from tight tailoring around the rear flash, the design’s pretty good.
