Dan Riccio has made the following statement regarding why Apple has decided to drop its plan for the AirPower:

Apple cancels AirPower

After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.

The AirPower is actually a charging mat that would charge any latest iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods wirelessly all at the same time. Upon releasing the new AirPods 2, Apple even mentioned that those new AirPods box would work on Apple’s upcoming AirPower wireless charging mat.

While Apple may have canceled its plans, there are many AirPower alternatives available on the market which are very similar to the one that Apple had designed. According to some sources, this could be one of Apple’s main reasons for dropping the AirPower project. Many Chinese companies have been making a clone of the AirPower charging mat for years now that are selling off for just $30 while Apple had trouble figuring out how they could sell there’s for $200.
