Apple has released a new USB-C Digital AV Multi-port dongle today. The $69 adapter has USB-A, HDMI and USB-C ports and significant improvements over its predecessor.
The new Digital AV Multiport Adapter gets HDMI 2.0 support over the previous model’s 1.4b, which means users can now cast 3840 x 2160 4K video at a 60Hz refresh rate for the following Apple devices:
- iPad Pro
- iMac Pro
- Retina iMac 2017 and later
- 15-inch MacBook Pro 2017 or later
For this to happen you’ll need an iPad Pro on iOS 12.4 minimum or a Mac on macOS 10.14.6 minimum. The previous adapter only supported 1080p at 60Hz and 4K at 30Hz refresh rate.
Other notable improvements include HDR video support and Dolby Vision on compatible projectors, TVs, and displays. In line with the new model’s release, Apple has discontinued the original Digital AV multiport dongle which was released a few years ago.
