Hulu originally added 4K content streaming with its service, which allowed subscribers to stream 4K resolution videos to gaming consoles such as the Playstation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. Then, in 2018 it was removed with the promise of an eventual return.
Today, the streaming company brings back 4K but exclusively for the Chromecast Ultra and Apple TV 4K. Hulu announced it in response to a tweet from a Hulu subscriber @RALPH4lyf. You can now stream originals, including Castle Rock, The Handmaid’s Tale and Catch-22 in 4K, but for a smooth experience you’ll need at least a 16Mbps connection.
4K streaming by Hulu supports SDR, or Standard Dynamic Range and not Dolby Vision or HDR10, which means that some of the shows won’t have the color depth or contrast quality that comes with other 4K content. The public has bemoaned the lack of available 4K content compared to other popular streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
