Google has announced several new features to its upcoming Pixel 4 mobile phone, one of which is Face Unlock to compete with Apple’s Face ID.
In the press release, Google said that users will be able to use Face Unlock to authenticate payments and unlock their smartphone just by looking at their phone’s screens. The technology that powers Face Unlock includes a proximity sensor, a flood illuminator, two IR cameras, an ambient light, and a dot projector.
A Soli radar chip can make unlocking significantly faster than what Apple has in its Face ID. Also, the hardware will be used for Motion Sense, where users can wave their hands in front of the Pixel 4 to silence calls or snooze alarms. Apple has explored non-touch solutions in their patents but none has made it to the surface yet.
The Pixel 4 doesn’t have a release date as of the moment, but rumors say that it will be launched in October.
